The Mifflin St. Jeor Equation
Calculation Wheel
WHAT IS THIS EQUATION?
The Mifflin St. Jeor Equation was recommended
for use as the standard predictive equation for Resting
Energy Expenditure (REE) by the American Dietetic
Association, replacing the formerHarris-Benedict
Equation.
The following are the calculations used to determine
REE for healthy, adult males and females:
MALE: 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) - 5 x Age + 5
FEMALE: 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) - 5 x Age -161
HOW CAN I USE THIS EQUATION IN
MY PRACTICE?
The Mifflin St. Jeor Equation can be used to estimate the
REE of healthy, adult patients. To create a more
interactive experience for your patients, we have
designed an “Energy Estimation Wheel” for resting energy
expenditure (REE) and resting metabolic rate (RMR).
